Matthew Perry’s death: ketamine overdose leads to criminal charges

Matthew Perry, beloved for his role as Chandler Bing on Friends, died on October 28, 2023, at age 54. He was found face down in a jacuzzi at his Los Angeles home. The official cause of death was the acute effects of ketamine, with contributing factors including drowning, coronary artery disease, and buprenorphine, a drug used to treat opioid addiction.

⚖️ Criminal Investigation & Charges

Five individuals have been charged in connection with Perry’s death:

  • Kenneth Iwamasa: Perry’s longtime assistant, who injected him with ketamine multiple times on the day he died

  • Dr. Salvador Plasencia: Supplied ketamine and lozenges; pleaded guilty to drug distribution

  • Dr. Mark Chavez: Provided ketamine via fraudulent prescriptions

  • Erik Fleming: Distributed 50 vials of ketamine to Iwamasa, including the fatal batch

  • Jasveen Sangha: Alleged “Ketamine Queen” of North Hollywood, accused of running a drug-selling operation

Three of the five have pleaded guilty. Perry’s death has sparked calls for tighter regulation of at-home ketamine therapy, a growing but controversial treatment for depression and anxiety.
