The Power Mole: How It Works


1. Inductive Coupling Technology:

   - The Power Mole utilizes inductive coupling technology, similar to what's found in wireless smartphone charging systems.

   - It wirelessly transmits up to 10 watts of electricity through window glass, wood, or any non-metallic material.


2. Components:

   - The setup consists of two puck-shaped components:

     - Transmitter: Adhered to the inside surface of a window pane, it's plugged into an indoor household outlet.

     - Receiver: Adhered to the outside of the pane, it's USB hard-wired to the outdoor device (e.g., security cameras or decorative lights).


3. How It Works:

   - As an alternating electric current passes through the transmitter's induction coil, it generates a fluctuating magnetic field.

   - This field passes through up to 30 mm of glass, producing an alternating electric current in the receiver's induction coil.

   - An integrated rectifier converts this AC current to DC (direct current), which powers the plugged-in gadget.


4. Efficiency and Limitations:

   - The Power Mole is efficient for low-power devices (e.g., security cameras) that utilize a USB or 5-volt input.

   - Efficiency ranges from around 50% (at the maximum spacing of 30 mm) up to 75% (at a spacing of less than 6 mm).

   - It automatically shuts off if the transmitter can't connect to the receiver, saving electricity.


5. Beyond Glass

   - The system isn't limited to glass—it can also transmit through wood or other non-metallic materials.

   - If metal is detected between the transmitter and receiver, the transmitter shuts itself off.


Availability


- The Power Mole is currently the subject of a Kickstarter campaign.

- A pledge of $59 gets you a package with a transmitter, receiver, and 3M adhesive pads for both units.

- While the Kickstarter is limited to US customers, international availability should follow if the campaign succeeds.
